Twiggy – A champion of the one word moniker and certainly one of the biggest…and, ironically, also smallest…supermodels of all time. She exemplified the Mod subculture and brought its high fashion style to the masses. Her waifish figure and Carnaby Street style cemented her icon status beyond her London peers. As much as her thick, chunky lashes become a signature of hers, so did bold, flower power patterns of the mod look. And so as 2012 winds down, this week is an homage to the past, present and future in a floral focused world.
Not since Marilyn has anyone been able to pull off the red-lipped, platinum haired look so well as Gwen Stefani. Adding insult to injury to those of us secretly harboring a desire for pin-up girl good looks, is Ms. Stefani’s uncanny ability to simultaneously master rocker-chic perfection. The blond bombshell, rocker girl hybrid is a rare creature indeed…but one that Gwen herself helps us wannabes to master with her personal style-as-inspiration and, of course, her fashion line. L.A.M.B., as she calls it, gives us just the right blend wearable street fashion and funky, dramatic rocker cool. Perfect, now we can be our own unique hybrid creatures 😉

It goes without saying that a great stylist should have great personal style. But still, let’s give credit where credit is due here. You can’t have a chat about the vets of the industry without making reference to Rachel Zoe. She has a penchant for piecing together a plethora of standout oversized accessories (and cloths for that matter) and always remains true to her signature style. She follows the motto that a bold lip and great pair of sunnies can make anyone look good, and from my perspective, she has worked her motto to perfection.

I did some serious e-globetrotting in search of this week’s Style Star and I must say, she was well worth the trip. Chinese actress, singer and producer, Fan Bingbing is my sartorial subject and the reason a few red carpet snaps reduced me to a Pavlovian-style drool. With an outstanding resume under her belt and Oscar caliber acclaim in her native country, Ms. Bingbing is quite the celebrity in her homeland. Her supernatural beauty brought her global reach as a L’oreal spokesperson, the only one from Asia in fact. What she is most known for stateside however, is an unmatched sense of style. Some of her most influential looks are ones that she has helped to create herself, and her retro-glam charm surfaces in whatever she is wearing. She is truly one to watch.
This week’s fashion role model, Sofia Vergara, was chosen not for her everyday fashion sense (though she does have a successful everyday fashion line at Kmart), but instead for her keen ability to dress right for her body type. Not that it’s a difficult task to make Ms. Vergara look stunning, but playing up your own best features is the best style advice anyone could ever adhere to.
Too many people follow the trends, and disregard this simple, golden rule of fashion. I have heard fashion commentators lament about how she is wearing yet another mermaid silhouette on the red carpet, right after hushing the ooohs and aaahs of the audience and acknowledging that she does look pretty darn good. So, props to Sofia Vergara for staying true to herself, her style and knowing what her best foot forward looks like.
