I have discovered a show on fabulous fake jewelry by Kenneth Jay Lane. Yes, history has been made about these spectacular pieces. I am going to head over to Palm Beach in the next few weeks to see the Fabulous Fakes jewelry show at the Norton Museum. The designer, Kenneth Jay Lane makes fantastic pieces so I will keep you posted on what I think is fabulous! I love the flamingo pin, perfect for Florida.

Kenneth Jay Lane was a student of the Rhode Island School of Design and was exceptionally talented. When he started his career, he was designing shoes for Christian Dior and Delman. Often in his free time, he created “flashy baubles” and he sold these creations at a Saks Fifth Avenue store. His designs were so popular, Saks sold out of their inventory in one day. He became an instant success and ended up designing for many Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Nan Kempner and Diana Vreeland. The necklace below is Kenneth Jay Lanes rendition of the famous “Holly Golightly” pearl necklace that Audrey Hepburn wore in the classic movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. This rendition of the original design was first worn by Natalie Portman for the November 2006 issue of Harpers Bazaar magazine. After that, this necklace became famous and was featured and coveted on various magazines world wide.
Kenneth knew Audrey Hepburn and designed this necklace in memory of her.
He also designed for politicians. He created the three strand pearl necklace worn by Barbara Bush at her husbands inaugural ball. As a designer, I loved his philosophy that ” elegance, good taste and luxury never go out of style.” This is true. The Bush Presidential Library carry his line of jewelry as well as many museums like the Smithsonian and The Dallas Museum of Art.
He also designs for many current starlets like Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Sarah Jessica Parker above is wearing that gorgeous floral dress from AKA New York that was featured in the movie Sex and the City. The ring she wears is from Kenneth Jay Lane. A perfect compliment.
Other celebrities include Kelly Rutherford wearing these gorgeous Regal Teardrop Earrings. These look very similar to the earrings Angelina Jolie wore to the Oscars a year ago. As Lane has been heard to say “I like to create jewelry that can be worn anytime of the year, by any woman. Glamor is all year round.”
This is a quote I will remember forever as I love to dress up. My mother always said, it is better to be overdressed than under dressed no matter what the occasion. No wonder I love his glamorous style and designs. It exudes luxury, elegance yet his works offer a hint of the exotic. Kenneth was amazing considering he designed for Avon as well as for famous people from Hollywood to Washington to European idols like Princess Diana. Of course, he has now ventured into handbags. A perfect evolution in design. What woman wouldn’t want a bag designed to compliment her jewelry? I love it!
Well, I am looking forward to the show and will have to get his book while I at the Norton Museum so I can see more of his luscious creations. If you are out in that area, try to see it, but if not, shop on line or via QVC as I know you can find something fabulous and original….just like the designer.
